Sergei Dovlatov

Sergei Dovlatov (1941-1990) was a prominent Soviet journalist and writer, celebrated for his satirical and poignant insights into Soviet life. Born in Ufa, Russia, he studied at Leningrad State University and worked variously as a journalist and tour guide, experiences that deeply influenced his writing. Known for his distinctive narrative style, Dovlatov’s works often explore themes of freedom, identity, and the absurdities of Soviet bureaucracy, earning him international acclaim despite being censored in his homeland. Among his most notable works are "The Suitcase," "The Compromise," and "The Zone." Dovlatov emigrated to the United States in 1978, where he continued writing until his untimely death.
