Bessie Head

Bessie Head

About

Bessie Head was a South African-born writer who became one of Africa's most celebrated authors. Born in 1937 to a white mother and Black father during apartheid, she faced persecution and fled to Botswana in 1964, where she lived as a refugee for fifteen years before gaining citizenship. Her novels, including "When Rain Clouds Gather" and "Maru", explore themes of racial identity, exile, and belonging with remarkable psychological depth. Head's work draws from her own experiences of marginalization to illuminate universal human struggles. She died in 1986, leaving a powerful literary legacy.
