About

Iakovos Kambanellis (1921–2011) was one of Greece's most celebrated playwrights, screenwriters, and poets. Born on the island of Naxos, he was captured during World War II and imprisoned in the Mauthausen concentration camp — an experience that profoundly shaped his literary voice. His memoir "Mauthausen" stands as a landmark of Greek wartime literature, while his play "The Courtyard of Miracles" ("Η Αυλή των Θαυμάτων") cemented his reputation as a master of compassionate, humanistic storytelling. He also wrote the lyrics to Mikis Theodorakis's iconic "Mauthausen Cycle." Kambanellis received numerous accolades and remains a towering figure in modern Greek letters.
