John Fante (1909-1983) was an influential American novelist, short story writer, and screenwriter known for his vivid portrayal of the Italian-American experience. Born in Denver, Colorado, Fante drew on his upbringing in a working-class family to infuse his writing with raw emotion and authenticity. His most famous work, "Ask the Dust," is part of a trilogy featuring his alter ego, Arturo Bandini, and is celebrated for its gritty depiction of 1930s Los Angeles. Fante's work, often marked by themes of poverty and ambition, has inspired a generation of writers, including Charles Bukowski, who lauded him as a major influence.
