Born in 1954 in Kyrgyzstan, he later moved to Uzbekistan. Ismailov's works, written in Russian, Uzbek, and English, have reached a global audience despite being banned in Uzbekistan. His notable books include "The Railway" and "The Devil’s Dance," capturing the complexities of Soviet and post-Soviet life. Besides writing, Ismailov served as a writer-in-residence at the BBC World Service.
