He spent his early years apprenticed in the shipping industry before serving in World War II, where he was captured as a prisoner of war. Newby's escape to neutral Switzerland inspired his memoir, "Love and War in the Apennines." His passion for adventure saw him take on challenges like sailing the Atlantic and trekking in remote mountain ranges, chronicling these experiences in his books. Best known for his humorous and engaging narrative style, Newby left an indelible mark on travel literature before passing away in 2006.
