Robert van Gulik was a Dutch diplomat, sinologist, and author best known for his Judge Dee mystery series, which brought ancient Chinese detective fiction to a global audience. Born in 1910 in Zutphen, Netherlands, van Gulik's career as a diplomat took him across Asia, where he developed a deep appreciation for Chinese culture and literature. His translations and original stories, inspired by historical Chinese magistrate Judge Dee, are celebrated for their historical accuracy and intricate plots. A talented polymath, van Gulik was also a musician and illustrator, creating the accompanying artwork for his novels. He passed away in 1967.
