About

Simin Daneshvar was a pioneering Iranian author and academic, widely regarded as the first Iranian woman to publish a novel in Persian. Born in 1921 in Shiraz, she studied Persian literature at the University of Tehran and later at Stanford University. Her landmark novel "Savushun" (1969), one of the best-selling Persian novels of the twentieth century, explored themes of love, resistance, and national identity against the backdrop of World War II–era Iran. A professor at the University of Tehran for many years, Daneshvar was also the wife of celebrated writer Jalal Al-e Ahmad. She passed away in 2012.
