Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis (1839–1908) was a pioneering Brazilian writer, often hailed as one of the greatest literary figures in Brazil and beyond. Born in Rio de Janeiro, he rose from humble beginnings to become a master of prose and poetry. As a novelist, playwright, and short story writer, Machado de Assis explored themes of social class, human psychology, and the complexities of the Brazilian society of his time. His use of irony and unconventional narrative techniques have influenced countless writers. Notable works include "Dom Casmurro" and "The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas." Machado also founded the Brazilian Academy of Letters.
