Nevil Shute was the pen name of Nevil Shute Norway, an English novelist and aeronautical engineer who became one of the most popular writers of the mid-20th century. Born in 1899, he worked in the emerging aviation industry before turning to full-time writing. His experiences in engineering and World War II deeply influenced his fiction, which combined technical precision with compelling human drama. Best known for novels including "A Town Like Alice" and "On the Beach", Shute crafted stories of ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances with dignity and resilience. He emigrated to Australia in 1950, where he died in 1960.
