About

Guy de Maupassant was a French writer who mastered the art of the short story in the late 19th century. A protégé of Gustave Flaubert, he wrote over 300 short stories, six novels, and numerous travel writings during his brief but prolific career. His works, including the novel "Bel-Ami" and celebrated stories like "The Necklace," are renowned for their psychological insight, irony, and crisp prose. Maupassant explored themes of deception, social class, and human nature with unflinching realism. Despite battling syphilis, he produced masterful literature until mental illness forced him to stop writing. He died in 1893 at age 42.
