Haing Ngor

About

Haing Ngor was a Cambodian physician, actor, and author who survived the Khmer Rouge genocide. Trained as an obstetrician-gynecologist, he endured four years of forced labor, starvation, and torture under Pol Pot's regime, during which he lost his wife and most of his family. After escaping to Thailand in 1979 and eventually settling in the United States, he wrote the memoir "Survival in the Killing Fields," documenting his harrowing experiences. Ngor won an Academy Award for his powerful portrayal of journalist Dith Pran in "The Killing Fields" (1984), becoming the first Asian actor to win an Oscar.
