Bel Kaufman was a distinguished American author and educator, best known for her acclaimed novel "Up the Down Staircase," published in 1965. Born in Berlin in 1911 and raised in Odessa and Kyiv, she immigrated to the United States in 1923. A passionate advocate for education, Kaufman taught in New York City high schools before becoming a full-time writer.
