About

Jan Potocki (1761–1815) was a Polish nobleman, explorer, linguist, and writer whose extraordinarily adventurous life rivaled the tales he penned. A seasoned traveler who journeyed through Egypt, Morocco, China, and the Caucasus, Potocki channeled his vast experiences and encyclopedic intellect into his masterwork, "The Manuscript Found in Saragossa" — a labyrinthine novel of nested stories blending adventure, philosophy, horror, and dark comedy. Written primarily in French, the novel was published in fragments during his lifetime and only fully assembled posthumously. Potocki's singular imagination secured his place as a towering, if underappreciated, figure of European Romantic literature.
