Clement Clarke Moore (1779–1863) was an American scholar, professor, and writer best known for his timeless poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas," commonly known as "The Night Before Christmas." Born in New York City, Moore was the son of Benjamin Moore, the Bishop of New York. He graduated from Columbia College and later taught classics and Oriental literature at the General Theological Seminary, which he helped found. Moore's iconic poem, penned in 1822, has become a beloved staple of Christmas celebrations globally. Beyond his literary contributions, Moore was deeply involved in philanthropic activities and local civic life in 19th-century New York.
