Nikolai Leskov was a nineteenth-century Russian writer renowned for his vivid portrayal of Russian life across all social classes. Born in 1831, he worked as a journalist and civil servant before turning to fiction, developing a distinctive narrative style that captured the rhythms and idioms of spoken Russian. His most celebrated works include "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk," a dark tale of passion and murder that inspired Shostakovich's opera, and "The Enchanted Wanderer," an episodic chronicle of a Russian everyman's spiritual journey. Leskov's masterful storytelling and linguistic innovation secured his place among Russia's great literary figures. He died in 1895.
