Mary Renault was a renowned British author best known for her historical novels set in Ancient Greece. Born on September 4, 1905, in London, she initially pursued a career in nursing before turning to writing. Renault gained prominence with her novel "The Last of the Wine" (1956), followed by "The King Must Die" (1958) and "The Persian Boy" (1972), among others. Her work is celebrated for its meticulous historical research and vivid characterizations, particularly those exploring themes of heroism and love. Renault spent much of her life in South Africa, where she lived with her lifelong partner, Julie Mullard, until her death in 1983.
