Sidney Poitier was a groundbreaking actor, director, and author born in Miami in 1927. Raised in the Bahamas, he moved to the United States at 15, overcoming racial barriers to become a trailblazer in Hollywood. Poitier was the first Black actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor with his role in “Lilies of the Field” (1963). Beyond his iconic acting career, he directed several films including “Stir Crazy” (1980), and authored books such as his memoir, “The Measure of a Man.” A recipient of numerous accolades, Poitier was celebrated for his dignity, grace, and pioneering spirit.
