Herman Melville (1819–1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet best known for his novel *Moby-Dick*. Born in New York City, Melville's early life was marked by adventure and travel, inspiring much of his literary work. He first gained popularity with his early novels *Typee* and *Omoo*, which drew on his experiences at sea and life in the South Seas. Although *Moby-Dick*, published in 1851, was initially met with mixed reviews, it has since become recognized as a masterpiece of American literature. Later in life, Melville focused on poetry, leaving a profound impact on American letters.
