About

Horace Walpole (1717–1797), an English writer, art historian, and polymath, is best known for his seminal Gothic novel, "The Castle of Otranto" (1764), which established the framework for Gothic fiction. The son of Sir Robert Walpole, Britain's first Prime Minister, Horace became a prominent figure in 18th-century literary and social circles. His extensive correspondence and diaries offer insight into the Georgian era. Walpole was also a prolific letter writer, art enthusiast, and antiquarian, noted for his architectural innovations at Strawberry Hill, his Gothic Revival villa. His creative legacy continues to influence literature, architecture, and historiography.
