About

Cao Xueqin was an eighteenth-century Chinese novelist best known for writing "Dream of the Red Chamber" (also known as "The Story of the Stone"), one of China's Four Great Classical Novels. Born into a wealthy family that served the Qing imperial household, Cao experienced dramatic reversals of fortune when his family fell from grace. This personal trajectory deeply influenced his masterwork, an epic semi-autobiographical novel depicting the decline of an aristocratic family. Though he died in poverty around 1763-1764, leaving the novel incomplete, his profound exploration of love, fate, and the ephemeral nature of wealth established him as one of Chinese literature's most celebrated authors.
