Edna Adan Ismail is a pioneering Somali medical professional, educator, and advocate for women's health and rights. Born in 1937, she trained as a nurse and midwife in the UK before returning to Somalia, where she became the country’s first qualified nurse-midwife. Edna served as the first female Foreign Minister of Somaliland and has been a vocal activist against female genital mutilation (FGM). She founded the Edna Adan University Hospital in Hargeisa, which focuses on training the next generation of healthcare professionals. Her dedication to improving maternal and infant health has garnered international recognition, making her an inspiring figure in global health.
