About

Bernard-Marie Koltès (1948–1989) was a visionary French playwright whose works redefined contemporary European theatre. Born in Metz, France, he studied drama in Strasbourg before forging a bold theatrical voice marked by poetic intensity and unflinching examinations of alienation, desire, and power. His acclaimed plays, including "Combat de nègre et de chiens", "Dans la solitude des champs de coton", and "Roberto Zucco", earned him international recognition and a lasting legacy. A close collaborator of director Patrice Chéreau, Koltès brought raw, hypnotic language to the stage. He died of AIDS-related illness at just forty-one, leaving behind a profoundly influential body of work.
