William Pène du Bois

William Pène du Bois (1916–1993) was a distinguished American author and illustrator renowned for his imaginative children's literature. Born in New Jersey, he was the son of artist Guy Pène du Bois and followed in his father’s creative footsteps. A graduate of the National Academy of Design, du Bois expertly blended wit and whimsy in his storytelling, captivating young readers with classic works like "The Twenty-One Balloons," which won the 1948 Newbery Medal. His vibrant illustrations and distinct narrative style earned him a devoted following.
