Howard Dully

About

Howard Dully is an American author and lobotomy survivor who became one of the youngest people ever to undergo the controversial transorbital lobotomy procedure at age twelve in 1960. Performed by Dr. Walter Freeman, the operation was ordered by his stepmother for behavioral issues that were later understood as normal childhood responses to family dysfunction. Decades later, Dully embarked on a journey to understand what happened to him, resulting in an award-winning NPR documentary and his memoir {{My Lobotomy}}, co-written with Charles Fleming. His story has brought international attention to the dark history of psychosurgery and its lasting impacts on patients.
