Eugen Herrigel (1884–1955) was a German philosopher renowned for his exploration of Zen Buddhism and its intersection with Western thought. Best known for his influential book "Zen in the Art of Archery," published in 1948, Herrigel introduced Western audiences to the spiritual and philosophical dimensions of Japanese archery, Kyudo. His work emphasizes the significance of mindfulness and the transcendence of the self in mastering any art form. Herrigel's experiences in Japan, including his apprenticeship under Master Archer Awa Kenzo, deeply informed his understanding of Zen. His writings continue to inspire those interested in Eastern philosophies and meditative practices.
