Sophocles was a celebrated ancient Greek playwright, born around 497/6 BC in Colonus, near Athens. He is renowned for his significant contributions to Greek tragedy, with a career that spanned more than 60 years. Sophocles is best known for his Theban plays, which include the iconic works "Oedipus Rex," "Antigone," and "Oedipus at Colonus." His innovative use of drama, character development, and exploration of fate and morality greatly influenced Western literature and theatre. Over his lifetime, he authored over 120 plays, of which only seven have survived in complete form. Sophocles passed away in 406/5 BC, leaving a profound legacy in the arts.
