About

Erskine Childers (1870–1922) was an influential Anglo-Irish author and politician best known for his espionage thriller, "The Riddle of the Sands" (1903), which is heralded as one of the first modern spy novels. Born in London, Childers served in the Second Boer War and later became passionate about Irish nationalism. His book significantly influenced the genre, inspiring future generations of spy writers. Later in life, he became deeply involved in Irish politics, supporting the cause of independence from Britain. Tragically, his political activities led to his execution during the Irish Civil War, marking him as both a literary and political martyr.
