About

Ambrose of Milan (c. 340–397) was one of the most influential figures of the early Christian Church and a towering Latin Father of Western Christianity. Born into a Roman aristocratic family, he served as governor of Liguria and Aemilia before being unexpectedly acclaimed Bishop of Milan in 374, despite not yet being baptized. A gifted theologian, preacher, and statesman, he mentored St. Augustine and famously confronted Emperor Theodosius over the Thessalonica massacre. His "Letters, 1–91" offer a rich window into fourth-century church politics, theology, and pastoral care, cementing his legacy as a masterful communicator and defender of orthodox Christianity.
