Italo Svevo, born Ettore Schmitz in 1861 in Trieste, was an influential Italian writer renowned for his exploration of the human psyche. His multicultural upbringing, rooted in both Italian and German heritage, deeply influenced his literary voice. Svevo's most celebrated work, "Zeno's Conscience," delves into the complexities of self-deception and introspection, earning him recognition as a precursor to modernist literature. A contemporary and friend of James Joyce, Svevo's innovative narrative style challenged traditional storytelling. His career, marked by a blend of irony and psychological depth, left an indelible mark on 20th-century literature. Svevo passed away in 1928.
