About

Meriwether Lewis, born on August 18, 1774, was an American explorer, soldier, and public administrator, best known for his role as the leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. This historical journey, commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson, explored the newly acquired western territories of the United States following the Louisiana Purchase. Raised in Virginia, Lewis served in the Virginia militia and the U.S. Army before being appointed as Jefferson's private secretary. His expedition with William Clark from 1804 to 1806 opened the west to American expansion. Tragically, Lewis's life was cut short under mysterious circumstances in 1809, at the age of 35.
