Mary McCarthy (1912–1989) was an influential American author, critic, and political activist. Known for her sharp wit and keen intellect, McCarthy's work often explored themes of politics, feminism, and social issues. She gained fame with her debut novel "The Company She Keeps" (1942) and further cemented her literary reputation with "The Group" (1963), a bestseller that examined the lives of eight Vassar College graduates. A member of the Partisan Review circle, McCarthy was a keen observer of 20th-century American society. Her essays, novels, and criticisms remain significant contributions to American literature and cultural discourse.
