Benjamin Nathans

Benjamin Nathans is an American historian and professor specializing in Russian and Soviet history. He teaches at the University of Pennsylvania, where he holds the Ronald S. Lauder Endowed Term Chair in History. Nathans is the author of "Beyond the Pale: The Jewish Encounter with Late Imperial Russia" and "To the Success of Our Hopeless Cause: The Soviet Human Rights Movement and the Dissident Predicament," which examines the struggle for human rights in the Soviet Union. His work has earned prestigious recognition, including a Guggenheim Fellowship. Nathans' scholarship illuminates the complex dynamics of dissent, identity, and political resistance in Russian history.
