About

Peter Wollen (1938–2019) was a British film theorist, critic, and filmmaker whose work profoundly shaped the study of cinema. Best known for his landmark text "Signs and Meaning in the Cinema", he brought together semiotics, psychoanalysis, and Marxist theory to illuminate how films communicate meaning. As a filmmaker, he collaborated closely with Laura Mulvey on experimental works including "Penthesilea" and "Riddles of the Sphinx". Wollen also wrote extensively on art, fashion, and culture, publishing collections such as "Raiding the Icebox" and "Paris Hollywood". He held academic positions at UCLA and remained a vital intellectual voice throughout his career.
