Fernando Pessoa

About

Fernando Pessoa (1888–1935) was a Portuguese poet, writer, and literary critic, recognized as one of the most significant literary figures of the 20th century. He was born in Lisbon and spent nine years of his youth in South Africa, where he became fluent in English. Known for his unique writing style, Pessoa created multiple heteronyms—distinct literary personas with their own biographies and writing styles—including Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis, and Álvaro de Campos. His masterful use of language and exploration of identity and existential themes have cemented his legacy in modern literature. Pessoa's posthumous publication, "The Book of Disquiet," remains highly influential.
