About

Novatian was a third-century Roman theologian and antipope who became one of the earliest significant Latin Christian writers. A presbyter of the Roman Church, he rose to prominence during the Decian persecution, advocating a strict stance on the reconciliation of lapsed Christians — those who had renounced their faith under pressure. His rigorist views led to a schism, resulting in his consecration as a rival bishop of Rome around 251 AD. Despite the controversy, his theological writings, particularly "On the Trinity," demonstrated considerable intellectual depth and helped shape early Christian doctrine. His fate remains uncertain, though tradition holds he died a martyr.
