Tony Hillerman was an acclaimed American author, best known for his series of mystery novels featuring Navajo tribal police officers Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee. Born in 1925 in Sacred Heart, Oklahoma, Hillerman served in World War II, earning the Silver Star and Purple Heart. He later attended the University of Oklahoma and worked as a journalist before transitioning to fiction writing. His deep respect for Native American culture and traditions is evident in his works, which authentically portray the Navajo way of life. Hillerman's novels won numerous awards, including the Edgar Award and the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America.
