Robert James Waller (1939-2017) was an American author and photographer best known for his 1992 novel *The Bridges of Madison County*, which became one of the bestselling books of the twentieth century. A former business professor and dean, Waller came to fiction writing later in life, bringing a lyrical, romantic sensibility to his work. His writing explores themes of love, longing, and the roads not taken, often featuring passionate but bittersweet relationships. *The Bridges of Madison County* was adapted into a successful film starring Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood. Waller also wrote other novels including *Slow Waltz in Cedar Bend* and *Puerto Vallarta Squeeze*, as well as essays on photography and music.
