Edith Œnone Somerville was an Irish novelist and artist, best known for her literary collaboration with her cousin Violet Florence Martin, together writing under the pseudonym "Somerville and Ross." Born on May 2, 1858, in Corfu, Greece, she spent much of her life in County Cork, Ireland. Educated in Paris and London, she excelled in painting and literature. Their most famous work, "The Real Charlotte" (1894), captures the late 19th-century Irish rural life with sharp wit and keen observation. Beyond writing, Somerville was an active suffragist and held a deep interest in animal rights. She passed away in 1949.
