Wilkie Collins (1824–1889) was a pioneering English novelist, playwright, and short story writer, best known for his suspenseful and intricately plotted narratives. A key figure in the development of the detective fiction genre, his most celebrated works include "The Woman in White" and "The Moonstone," often hailed as the first detective novel. A contemporary and friend of Charles Dickens, Collins frequently addressed themes of social justice and moral ambiguity in his work. Despite struggles with health issues and addiction, Collins produced a prolific body of work that continues to influence and captivate readers and writers to this day.
