Melvin Patrick Ely is an American historian and professor whose work illuminates the African American experience with depth and nuance. He is the author of "The Adventures of Amos 'n' Andy: A Social History of an American Phenomenon," a landmark study of the controversial radio and television program, and "Israel on the Appomattox: A Southern Experiment in Black Freedom from the 1790s Through the Civil War," which received the Pulitzer Prize in History.
