About

Mary Prince was a formerly enslaved woman from Bermuda and one of the most significant voices in abolitionist literature. Born around 1788 in Brackish Pond, Bermuda, she endured years of brutal enslavement across Bermuda, Turks Island, and Antigua before escaping to freedom in London in 1828. Her landmark autobiographical account, "The History of Mary Prince", published in 1831, became the first narrative by a Black woman to be published in Britain. Her courageous testimony played a vital role in the campaign to abolish slavery throughout the British Empire, leaving an enduring legacy in both literature and human rights history.
