About

Gottfried Keller was a Swiss novelist and poet, widely regarded as one of the most important German-language writers of the 19th century. Born in Zurich in 1819, he initially trained as a painter before turning to literature. His masterwork, the semi-autobiographical novel "Green Henry", established his reputation. Keller's fiction brilliantly captures Swiss village life with humor and psychological depth, as seen in his celebrated novellas "A Village Romeo and Juliet" and "Kleider machen Leute". He served as state secretary of Zurich for fifteen years while continuing to write. Keller died in 1890, leaving a legacy of realist fiction infused with romanticism.
