Ian MacDonald

Ian MacDonald (1948-2003) was a British music critic and author best known for his landmark Beatles study *Revolution in the Head: The Beatles' Records and the Sixties* (1994). A former *NME* journalist, MacDonald combined meticulous musicological analysis with cultural history, examining each Beatles song chronologically while contextualizing them within 1960s social upheaval. His work is distinguished by its technical precision, erudition, and controversial cultural commentary linking the era's drug experimentation to societal decline. MacDonald also wrote about other artists including Shostakovich and published *The People's Music*, examining popular music's evolution. His rigorous, opinionated approach made *Revolution in the Head* essential reading for serious Beatles scholars and music historians.
