About

Solomon Northup (1807–c. 1863) was an African-American farmer, musician, and writer born a free man in New York. He is best known for his autobiographical memoir, "Twelve Years a Slave," which details his harrowing experience of being kidnapped in Washington, D.C., and sold into slavery in the pre-Civil War South. Published in 1853, his powerful narrative played a significant role in raising awareness about the realities of slavery and bolstered the abolitionist movement. Northup's account remains a poignant testimony to his resilience and the enduring fight for freedom and justice. Little is known about his life following his emancipation.
