Narayana

About

Narayana was a Sanskrit scholar who lived in 12th-century India, though some sources place him in earlier centuries. He is best known for composing *The Hitopadesa* ("Beneficial Instruction"), a collection of Sanskrit fables and moral tales written in prose and verse. Drawing heavily from the earlier *Panchatantra*, Narayana adapted and reorganized these animal fables to provide practical wisdom on politics, friendship, and conduct. His work emphasizes ethical behavior and statecraft through engaging storytelling, making complex philosophical concepts accessible. *The Hitopadesa* became one of the most widely translated Sanskrit texts, influencing world literature and serving as a popular primer for Sanskrit students across centuries.
