Lucy Grealy was an acclaimed poet and memoirist known for her poignant exploration of identity, beauty, and resilience. Born in Dublin in 1963 and raised in the United States, she faced a challenging battle with cancer from the age of nine, resulting in numerous surgeries and facial disfigurement. Her powerful memoir, "Autobiography of a Face," candidly chronicles her experiences with illness and the societal perceptions of beauty. A graduate of Sarah Lawrence College and the Iowa Writers' Workshop, Grealy's work includes poetry that reflects her introspective nature. She left an indelible mark on contemporary memoir writing before her untimely passing in 2002.
