Bombs strike U.S. cities and military sites, causing fires, explosions, sonic detonations, quakes, slides, and a green mist. Breathed in, the toxin melts men into puddles of bloody clothes, but women may gain strange new powers.

High school science teachers leaving an Oregon mountain conference find that their blood causes plants to grow suddenly.

"Warrior" Mercury, in her 30s, is now incredibly strong and fast. "Seer" Stella, in her 40s, senses the future and directs the group where and when to go or stay. "Watcher" Imani gazes toward her lost family for hours. Karen, a Christian in her 50s known as a "Priestess," sees their powers manifest in the spirit world as a green glow.

"Healer" Gemma, 16, and then three children join after losing their respective parents. They meet bad and good people in their search for The Place to build their safe, perfect new world.
