The story "Omelas" was first published in a hard-cover science fiction anthology in October 1973, and the following year it won the prestigious Hugo Award for best short story.
The work was subsequently printed in Le Guin's short story collection Wind's Twelve Quarters (1975).
Le Guin (1929–2018) was an American writer who published twenty-two novels, eleven volumes of short stories, four collections of essays, twelve books for children, six volumes of poetry, and four translations, and received many awards, including the Hugo, Nebula, National Book Award, and PEN/Malamud. She was known for her exploration of gender and otherness.
