Lao Tzu, an ancient Chinese philosopher and writer, is traditionally credited as the founder of Taoism and as the author of the seminal text, the Tao Te Ching. Thought to have been born in the 6th century BCE, his name translates to "Old Master," reflecting his spiritual wisdom. Little is known about his life, with much of his story steeped in legend, including accounts of him serving as a record keeper in the Zhou dynasty court. His teachings emphasize living in harmony with the Tao, the fundamental principle that is the source of all existence, advocating simplicity, humility, and compassion.
